October Meeting - Two Meeting in October

Happy Birthday Dave

There is a change in our meeting program for Saturday October 1st due to an unexpected scheduling conflict between Harper Barnes and his publisher. The date and location remains the same.

We will be celebrating the birthday of World’s Fair President, David Roland Francis, on Saturday October 1st at 1:00 pm. The location will be on the World’s Fair grounds at the south end of the Brookings quadrangle on the campus of Washington University. We will gather in room 100 at Busch Hall. Consult your World’s Fair Bulletin for a parking map.

Sharon Smith, Curator at the Missouri History Museum, will present a program about the historic connection between Washington University and our Fair. The presentation will take place in a building leased to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition Company for use during the Fair. It housed the Department of Works serving as the headquarters for architects and engineers employed for the Fair.

President Francis, one of Washington University’s most prominent graduates, was born on October 1st, 1850. Besides serving as a Governor, Mayor,  Ambassador, and Secretary of the Interior, he was President of the 1904 World’s Fair and at the same time was President of the first Olympics ever held in the Western hemisphere.

Please join us for a piece of birthday cake and sign an oversized birthday card as we celebrate the birthday of the most prominent citizen of our city and state.

Ken Streett, Great Grandson of Rolla Wells, Mayor of the city of St. Louis in 1904 will share memories of his Grandfather.
